BJP workers revolt in Tezpur over 2026 Assam election seat deal

Hundreds of BJP leaders and workers took to the streets in Tezpur on Friday. They protested against the party's decision to hand over the Tezpur seat to its alliance partner, AGP, for the third time in a row. The demonstrators warned of stronger action if their demands were ignored.

The protest centred on the upcoming 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly elections. Local BJP members insisted the party should field its own candidate in the 67 No. Tezpur constituency. They pointed out that BJP had already won the seat in both 2016 and 2021, with Ranjeeta Daimary securing victory twice. AGP, meanwhile, has not won the seat in recent election cycles, with Congress last holding it in 2011.

The protesters made it clear they would not back down. Some even threatened to boycott the election if BJP's central leadership repeated its past decision. Their agitation is set to continue until the party agrees to nominate a BJP candidate for the constituency. The demonstration highlighted growing frustration among local party workers. Many argued that ceding the seat to AGP would weaken BJP's position in a constituency it has successfully contested before.

The protest in Tezpur signals a potential rift between local BJP members and the party's central leadership. If the demands go unmet, the threat of an election boycott could impact BJP's campaign strategy in the 2026 polls. The outcome will determine whether the seat remains with AGP or returns to a BJP candidate.
