Icy roads led to a series of traffic accidents across Bavaria over the weekend. Police reports highlight that drivers repeatedly failed to adjust their speed for wintry conditions. The incidents caused significant damage but, fortunately, no injuries were recorded.
In the Hummeltal area, two separate crashes occurred due to black ice. The combined damage from these incidents reached around €30,000. Authorities noted that both drivers had been travelling too fast for the slippery roads.
On Federal Highway 8 near Mötzing, another motorist lost control on a patch of black ice. The resulting collision caused an estimated €7,000 in damage. Police confirmed the driver had not slowed down appropriately for the conditions. The pattern continued across the region. A mass collision on B173 in Lichtenfels on January 12, 2026, was also blamed on excessive speed. Similar crashes in Niederbayern and Unterfranken followed the same trend—drivers ignoring the hazards of snow and ice. Despite the widespread damage, no injuries were reported in Upper Palatinate or Upper Franconia. Police have stressed the importance of reducing speed in winter weather to prevent further incidents.
The weekend’s accidents have left a trail of costly vehicle damage. With black ice and snow still affecting roads, authorities are urging drivers to slow down and drive with caution. The lack of injuries offers some relief, but the financial impact remains substantial.
