Bodoland University Shuts Down as Tribal Groups Protest ST Status Expansion

Protests have shut down Bodoland University after the Assam Cabinet granted Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to six communities. Tribal student groups, including BUSU and CCTOA, blocked campus entrances, halting all academic and administrative work. The move has sparked anger among indigenous organisations who claim their rights are under threat.

The unrest began after the state government’s November 2024 announcement. The Assam Cabinet approved ST status for the Rajbongshi, Mising, Deori, Boro, Dimasa, and Koch Rajbongshi communities. Tribal student bodies immediately opposed the decision.

The demonstrations have brought Bodoland University to a standstill. Exams remain suspended, and access to the campus is still restricted. Authorities have not yet responded to the growing demands of tribal student groups.
