Bombay HC Flags Hardship In Relocating SGNP Encroachers To Palghar, Seeks Practical Rehabilitation Solution
The Bombay High Court has raised concerns over plans to relocate families living in Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP). Officials proposed moving them to Palghar, but judges questioned the practicality of such a shift. The case will now be heard again on February 3, 2026.
In early December 2025, the Collector of Palghar shortlisted five villages—Kandarvan, Khamloli, Bhatmodi, Bhinarli, and Eksar—for housing projects meant for encroachers in SGNP. The state also identified three potential land parcels: two in Palghar and one in Thane district.
The court, however, expressed doubts about relocating families so far from their workplaces. Judges pointed out that daily train travel would be neither convenient nor affordable, despite claims that fares would be manageable. An earlier proposal to build rehabilitation tenements in Chandivali, Andheri East, had already been dismissed due to height restrictions.
The hearing has been adjourned until February 3, 2026. The court’s concerns focus on the hardship of moving families away from their livelihoods. A final decision on rehabilitation sites remains pending.
