Bonn utility chief resigns amid lingering property scandal fallout

Olaf Hermes, the head of Bonner Stadtwerke, has announced his resignation amid an ongoing property scandal in Bonn. The controversy first emerged in December, when reports revealed attempts by local politicians to interfere with a land deal at the former Hangelar Airfield. Hermes, who has led the municipal utility since 2022, now plans to step down by summer.

The scandal began when Hermes uncovered alleged efforts by politicians to discourage Bonner Stadtwerke from pursuing a land purchase at Hangelar Airfield. A legal review later suggested the process may not have been free from external influences or conflicts of interest. Despite this, the company's supervisory board reaffirmed its confidence in Hermes and the executive team.

The public prosecutor's office in Bonn closed its investigation into the matter in November 2024. No new legal steps are planned, and no further action is expected before March 2026. Meanwhile, Bonner Stadtwerke intends to forward a confidential report on the case to the authorities.

Hermes stated he could not foresee any scenario that would alter his decision to leave. His departure comes as the company prepares for major investments while also seeking cost-cutting measures for local public transport.

The resignation marks the end of Hermes' two-year tenure at the helm of Bonner Stadtwerke. The company will now move forward with its investment plans and efficiency measures without his leadership. The property scandal, however, remains under scrutiny as the confidential report is passed to prosecutors.
