Border Controls on A64 Cause Delays and Criticism: 60% of Businesses Demand End
Over 50,000 German workers commute daily to Luxembourg, but fixed controls on the A64 highway have caused delays and criticism. The checks, introduced in September 2024, are now set to continue until mid-March 2026. Businesses in the border region are feeling the impact.
The border controls have led to significant issues for commuters and businesses. Delays in traffic, both for commuters and freight, have deterred customers from Luxembourg. This has undermined the trust built over 40 years of Schengen. Retail, logistics, and service providers in the Trier-Luxembourg border area have been particularly hard hit. Around 14 percent of businesses have cited significant revenue losses, while 29 percent have experienced moderate declines. Nearly two-thirds of businesses in the region are now calling for an end to the checks.
A survey of companies showed strong support for ending the border controls. Forty-five percent supported an immediate end, while another 18 percent favored termination after the current deadline expires in March 2026. The German Federal Police, which currently conducts the controls, is expected to abolish them by mid-March 2026. This is linked to the full implementation of the EU Entry/Exit System by April 2026.
