Boric bids farewell as Chile's political era shifts sharply right
Chilean President Gabriel Boric delivered his final address before stepping down after four years in office. At 40, he acknowledged both achievements and setbacks during his time as the country's youngest modern leader. His term ends as José Antonio Kast, Chile's first far-right president since democracy was restored, prepares to take over.
Boric took office at 36, promising progressive reforms. In his farewell speech, he claimed Chile was now 'in better shape than it was four years ago.' Yet he admitted errors, including the mishandling of the Monsalve case and the controversial purchase of former President Salvador Allende's home.
He also expressed regret over unfulfilled pledges. A lack of political backing blocked efforts to erase university student debt and establish a national childcare system. Despite these challenges, Boric pledged to keep pushing for a 'more just, dignified, and equal' Chile until his final day. His successor, José Antonio Kast, assumed the presidency in March 2022 with a starkly different agenda. Kast's administration shifted right, focusing on cracking down on organised crime and tightening immigration rules. Social spending was cut, and foreign policy leaned closer to the US, while environmental regulations faced rollbacks under his more conservative approach.
Boric's departure marks the end of a left-leaning government that struggled to pass key reforms. Kast's leadership now sets Chile on a new course, with stricter security measures and reduced social programmes. The transition reflects a clear political shift after years of progressive policies.
