Why Mayor Palmer Regrets Some of His Remarks - Boris Palmer defies backlash, stays as Tübingen's controversial mayor

Boris Palmer, the outspoken mayor of Tübingen, has once again found himself at the centre of controversy. Known for his sharp-tongued remarks, he has faced repeated accusations of racism, particularly over his use of the N-word. Despite fierce criticism, Palmer insists he does not regret any of his statements.

His latest comments come as speculation swirled about a potential role in the next state government. Yet, he has now confirmed he will stay on as Tübingen's mayor instead.

Palmer's career has long been marked by provocative statements, especially on refugee policy. In 2023, he left the Green Party after years of clashes over his views on migration and other divisive topics. Since then, he has remained in office as a non-partisan figure, occasionally backing politicians like Cem Özdemir ahead of Baden-Württemberg's 2026 election.

While he admits to having gone too far at times, he claims his apologies were strategic—not sincere. He has criticised the public's tendency to demand remorse, arguing that people are often vilified until they back down. Still, he acknowledges toning down his rhetoric in recent months. Despite the backlash, Palmer has not ruled out political alliances that break from Green Party norms. He has even suggested pragmatic coalitions with the AfD, a stance that further distances him from his former party's mainstream ideology.

Palmer's refusal to retract his most controversial remarks keeps him in the spotlight. His decision to remain as Tübingen's mayor means the city will continue to be led by a figure who embraces confrontation. Whether his approach will shift or harden remains to be seen.
