BPOL-KL: Bicycle thief tracked and released despite arrest warrant
A 34-year-old Syrian man was arrested in Mainz on 15 December 2025 after police found him with a stolen e-bike. The bicycle had been tracked onto a train travelling from Wiesbaden to Mainz. Authorities confirmed the man was wanted in connection with a previous theft case.
The incident began when officers identified the stolen pedelec during a routine check. The man, who has not been named, was already subject to an outstanding arrest warrant for a serious theft offence. Despite this, he was released under the annual Christmas amnesty policy.
Police later searched his home but found no additional evidence linking him to other crimes. During questioning, the suspect claimed he had received the bike from a colleague. His statements, however, remained unclear and inconsistent.
Following the investigation, prosecutors have now launched a new case against him for aggravated theft.
The man remains under investigation for the latest offence. His release under the Christmas amnesty means no immediate detention, but the case will proceed through the courts. Authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the stolen e-bike.
