A major fire broke out at a recycling plant in Krefeld’s port area, sending thick smoke billowing into the sky. Firefighters worked for hours to bring the blaze under control, with no reports of injuries.
The fire began in a large pile of scrap metal at the facility. At its height, nearly 300 firefighters were called in to tackle the flames. Authorities quickly issued a warning via the Nina emergency alert app, advising residents about the smoke hazard.
The alert was later lifted in the evening as the smoke plume drifted away. Investigators have yet to enter the site due to lingering risks. Criminal police are leading the probe into the cause, though no details have been confirmed.
Multiple agencies, including the fire department, police, environmental office, and LANUV, are coordinating the response. A full investigation will start once the area is declared safe.
The fire has been fully extinguished, but the cause remains unknown. Residents were temporarily warned about smoke exposure before the all-clear was given. Authorities continue to monitor the situation as the investigation proceeds.
