Brandenburg President Calls for More Respect, Understanding Between East and West Germany
Ulrike Liedtke, President of the Brandenburg State Parliament and member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), has called for greater respect for the East on German Unity Day. She urges West Germans to visit and get to know the East better.
Liedtke acknowledges that travel mobility is currently more prevalent from the East to the West, rather than the other way around. She believes this needs to change to foster a deeper understanding between the two regions.
She emphasizes that, despite the fall of the Berlin Wall 31 years ago, there is still work to be done to achieve a truly united Germany. Liedtke suggests that disrespectful comments about the East's democratic traditions should be avoided to promote unity and understanding.
