Brandenburg Residents Can Now Fund Their Own City Projects
Residents of Brandenburg an der Havel Invited to Submit Project Ideas for 2026
Once again this year, residents of Brandenburg an der Havel are encouraged to submit their project ideas for the city. The deadline for applications is May 16, 2026. All necessary information and forms can be found on the Citizen Budget Information Page.
Mayor Daniel Keip stated:
"The Citizen Budget gives everyone in Brandenburg an der Havel the opportunity to actively and visibly shape our city. I warmly invite you to take part and look forward to receiving many creative and exciting proposals from residents of all ages."
The first submissions have already arrived—and it's clear that the people of Brandenburg an der Havel have fantastic ideas to further enrich community life across the city's neighborhoods and strengthen social cohesion. You can see which projects were launched in 2025 here.
What Is the Citizen Budget?
Through this participatory process, residents can directly decide how a portion of the city's discretionary budget funds are spent. The administration provides guidance and support throughout. A total of €150,000 is available for implementing projects proposed under the Citizen Budget.
To ensure your proposal can be reviewed for feasibility, legality, and cost by the relevant city departments, please consider the following requirements:
- Maximum funding request: €25,000 per project
- A detailed project description, including a financial estimate (location, required materials with examples, and, if possible, cost quotes)
What Happens to My Proposal?
After the submission deadline, city departments will assess each idea for feasibility. The proposals and review results will then be presented to the City Council for consideration. Voting will take place during the City Council meeting in June 2026, where each council member may cast votes for up to five projects within the total budget.
The proposals with the most votes—up to the €150,000 budget limit—will be implemented by the administration.
A Look Back at Past Achievements
The results of previous Citizen Budget initiatives are visible throughout the city. Cultural projects include the musical stones in Theaterpark, the renovation of the open-air stage in Kruggpark, and new fresh and wastewater connections at the Wust festival grounds.
Other completed projects have strengthened social cohesion or improved public spaces, such as the renovation of the playground at the municipal hospital, the installation of bike repair stations, and support for the Brandenburg Food Bank.
In total, 18 projects were selected through the 2024 and 2025 Citizen Budgets, with nearly €280,000 allocated from the city's budget.
Reminder: Proposals can be submitted year-round. Once the 2026 deadline passes, all new ideas will automatically be considered for the 2027 Citizen Budget.
