Brandenburg's antisemitism commissioner faces ethics probe over consulting firm ties

Brandenburg’s antisemitism commissioner, Andreas Büttner, is under scrutiny over his involvement with a consulting firm. The state parliament administration in Potsdam has launched a review into whether he complied with civil service rules on outside earnings. Questions centre on whether proper approvals were obtained for any income generated beyond his official role. Büttner took up his position as antisemitism commissioner in 2024, following a stint as a state lawmaker. In 2023, he co-founded a management consultancy with two acquaintances. The firm, though registered, reportedly never pursued commercial projects and remains inactive, though not formally dissolved.

The parliamentary administration is now examining the company’s registration and Büttner’s financial disclosures. Ulrike Liedtke, president of the state parliament, has already held a supervisory discussion with him about the matter. Authorities are specifically checking compliance with Section 85 of Brandenburg’s civil service regulations, which governs external income. Büttner has stated that all corporate affiliations were disclosed in line with legal requirements. However, he declined to comment further on the ongoing review, leaving questions about potential oversights unanswered.

The investigation continues into whether Büttner followed proper procedures for outside work. If violations are found, further steps may be taken under civil service rules. For now, the review remains focused on financial transparency and adherence to Brandenburg’s regulations.
