New Law to Ease Burden on Municipalities in Integration - Brandenburg’s Bold Plan to Transform Refugee Integration Through Work and Accountability
Brandenburg is introducing a new system to manage refugee integration, aiming to ease the burden on local authorities and foster wider acceptance. The State Reception Act, proposed by Interior Minister René Wilke, is currently being piloted at the Central Foreigners’ Authority in Frankfurt (Oder).
The new system will ensure opportunities for refugees who are eager to integrate and consequences for those who are not. It aims to distribute refugees in a controlled manner, relieving pressure on districts and cities. Key to this is the establishment of transition centers, which will support asylum seekers in becoming job-ready and building acceptance in society.
Local authorities will only be assigned asylum seekers with clear integration prospects. Once their language skills are sufficient, refugees will be placed in internships to secure permanent jobs. The goal is to make integration sustainable, with refugees working, having a home, paying taxes, and contributing to social security.
The new system, currently in a pilot phase, is expected to promote refugee integration more effectively. It aims to give a chance to those who are willing and able to integrate, while ensuring consequences for those who are not. Brandenburg's Interior Minister René Wilke hopes this new law will ease the burden on local authorities and foster broader societal acceptance of refugees.
