Braunschweig reshapes leadership with new urban and cultural roles by 2027
Braunschweig is set to restructure its city administration with two key leadership changes. Gerold Leppa has been nominated to take over as Head of Urban Development in early 2026. Meanwhile, Dr. Doreen Götzky is proposed to become the new Commissioner for Culture and Science from 2027.
Gerold Leppa’s appointment will be discussed by the city council on December 9. If approved, he will replace Heinz-Georg Leuer as Head of Urban Development starting January 1, 2026. Alongside this role, he will continue serving as Economic Affairs Commissioner. His new department will merge urban planning, transport, construction, and economic affairs into a single unit.
The proposed changes mark a shift in Braunschweig’s administrative structure. Leppa’s expanded role and Götzky’s cultural expertise are intended to strengthen the city’s development and cultural sectors. Final decisions on both appointments will be made in December.
