Braunschweig seeks 2,300 volunteers for its 2026 local elections
Braunschweig is calling for volunteers to help run its local elections on 13 September 2026. The city needs around 2,300 workers to ensure polling stations operate smoothly and ballots are counted correctly. Those who take part will receive payment for their time.
To qualify as a volunteer, applicants must be at least 16 years old on election day. They should also have lived in Braunschweig for at least three months and hold German or EU citizenship. Anyone eligible to vote in the municipal elections can join an electoral board.
Each general electoral board will have **eight members**, overseeing voting at **180 polling stations** across the city. Volunteers are especially needed in the **western, southern, and northern districts**. Their tasks will include managing polling stations and assisting with ballot counts. Workers will earn **€85** for their service on **13 September**. If no candidate wins an absolute majority, a runoff election will take place on **27 September**, with volunteers receiving an additional **€40** for that day. Interested citizens can sign up online or contact the **Electoral Office's volunteer team** directly.
The city is relying on community support to ensure the elections run efficiently. With a clear need for workers, officials encourage eligible residents to step forward. Those who volunteer will play a direct role in the democratic process while receiving compensation for their efforts.
