Braunschweig’s Administrative Court Welcomes New Honorary Judges for 2025–2030 Term

The new term for honorary judges at the Administrative Court of Braunschweig has started, bringing a fresh batch of experts from diverse backgrounds to enrich the court's decision-making process. Dr. Torsten Baumgarten, Vice President of the court, welcomed the new and re-elected honorary judges at an introductory event on April 23.

The term for these honorary judges, known as Ehrenrichter, lasts five years, from April 1, 2025, to March 31, 2030. They are elected by a committee comprising the court's president, a state government-appointed civil servant, and seven trustee persons chosen from the district's inhabitants.

During their term, honorary judges work alongside professional judges in chambers, helping to decide cases. However, they do not participate in decisions made outside oral hearings or in urgent proceedings. The chamber typically consists of three professional judges and two honorary judges, with the chamber able to delegate decisions to a single professional judge if the case is not complex or significant.

Torsten Baumgarten highlighted the importance of honorary judges' involvement, bringing varied experiences and insights from different fields and personal life areas. Their participation enhances the court's decisions, making them more convincing and understandable. The court expresses gratitude to the outgoing honorary judges for their long-standing commitment.
