MPs Pose with Suitcases from Holocaust Exhibition - Bremen lawmakers apologize for offensive Holocaust exhibition photo

Two lawmakers in Bremen have apologised after posting an insensitive image at a Holocaust exhibition. The image, shared on Instagram, showed them posing with suitcases symbolising deportation. The incident took place inside the Bremische Bürgerschaft, where the exhibition is currently on display.

Sahhanim Görgü-Philipp and Katharina Kähler, both members of the Bremen parliament, uploaded the image to social media. It featured them standing beside suitcases from the exhibition—objects meant to represent the forced deportation of Holocaust victims. The post was later deleted, but not before drawing criticism.

Antje Grotheer, the parliament's president, condemned the image as 'completely inappropriate'. Both lawmakers issued apologies, with Görgü-Philipp calling the act 'stupid' and Kähler admitting it was a 'complete lapse in judgment'. They also apologised directly to Grotheer for their actions.

The exhibition, focused on the Holocaust, remains open to the public in the parliament building. The incident has sparked discussions about respect and awareness when engaging with historical displays.

The two politicians have removed the image and acknowledged their mistake. Their apologies came after public backlash and official criticism. The exhibition continues, serving as a reminder of the Holocaust's tragic history.
