Bremen renews landmark agreement to ensure fair public-sector jobs
Bremen’s government has renewed its commitment to fair working conditions in the public sector. On 4 March 2023, officials and union representatives signed the latest version of the Bremen Declaration on Fair Employment Conditions. The agreement, first introduced in 2014, aims to improve job quality and attract skilled workers to the city’s administration.
The declaration was signed by Mayor Andreas Bovenschulte, Finance Senator Björn Fecker, and Kristina Vogt, the Senator for Economy, Ports, and Transformation. Lars Hartwig, chairman of the works council, also added his signature. This marks the third renewal of the agreement, following updates in 2018 and 2020.
The updated declaration builds on nearly a decade of efforts to enhance public-sector jobs in Bremen. With stronger wage protections and a focus on employee recognition, the city aims to secure a stable and skilled workforce. The agreement remains in effect until the next review in four years.
