Bremen shuts down Klinikum Links der Weser in major healthcare reform
Bremen’s Klinikum Links der Weser (LdW) is set to close as part of wider cost-saving reforms. The decision comes under the authority of Senatorin Claudia Bernhard, who oversees health policy in the city-state. Business leaders have backed the move, calling it a responsible step for Bremen’s future healthcare system.
The closure of Klinikum Links der Weser forms part of Bremen’s hospital restructuring plan, known as the Krankenhausrahmenplan. Senatorin Bernhard, who leads the health, women, and consumer protection department, must approve the shutdown. She has urged politicians from all parties to collaborate on the issue, stressing the need for unified action in the city’s best interest.
Peter Bollhagen, state chairman of the Association of Family-Owned Businesses (DIE FAMILIENUNTERNEHMER), has publicly supported the decision. He described the closure as a tough but necessary choice, reflecting fiscal responsibility. The association believes it will lead to a more efficient use of public funds. Currently, Bremen operates ten hospitals. However, not all can sustain high-quality, full-spectrum medical services. Bollhagen has emphasised the need for a modern, financially sound healthcare policy to address these challenges.
The shutdown of Klinikum Links der Weser marks a shift in Bremen’s hospital network. With Senatorin Bernhard’s approval, the city aims to streamline services and reduce costs. The move has gained backing from business groups, who see it as a pragmatic solution for long-term healthcare planning.
