Bremen’s Crafts Chamber Celebrates 175 Years of German Artisan Legacy

The Bremen Chamber of Crafts is marking its 175th anniversary this month. Founded in March 1849, it stands as Germany’s oldest—and likely the world’s oldest—crafts chamber. Around 300 guests gathered recently to celebrate the milestone at a special ceremony.

The chamber traces its origins to the first Bremen Constitution of 1849, which paved the way for self-governance in the crafts sector. Over time, it became a model for similar organisations across Germany. Today, it represents roughly 5,400 member businesses in the region.

The anniversary ceremony underscored the chamber’s enduring significance. With 175 years of history, it continues to support local trades while adapting to contemporary demands. The event also reinforced the need for solutions to the persistent labour shortage facing the sector.
