Bremen's DBS Gains New Powers to Tackle Littering with Fines and Warnings
Bremen's city cleaning service, DBS, will soon gain new powers to tackle news littering more effectively. The 'Urban Environmental and Cleanliness Service' has been approved, with employees set to receive training in the middle of next year to legally exercise these new responsibilities.
The new service, based at the DBS, will empower employees to issue warnings, record personal details, and collect and impose fines for careless disposal of items like cigarette butts, packaging, or food remains in public spaces. This includes targeting illegal dumping, such as waste bags next to recycling or clothing containers.
In the first year, around 1,200 littering cases could be fined. Plans are in place to add more staff in the coming years to further strengthen the service. A new ordinance is being created to grant DBS employees these powers. The costs for the strengthened and supported service will be fully covered by the DBS's waste fee budget.
With the approval of the 'Urban Environmental and Cleanliness Service', Bremen is set to see more stringent penalties for littering. DBS employees will be trained and equipped to issue fines and warnings, helping to keep public spaces cleaner and more pleasant for residents and visitors alike.
