Bremen's Green Jobs Scheme Turns Waste Work into Permanent Careers
Project Helps Citizens' Income Recipients Transition into the Job Market
A program coordinated by the Arbeit und Lernzentrum e.V. (alz) has already successfully helped people receiving Bürgergeld (citizens' income) transition into the regular labor market in previous rounds. Most recently, at the end of 2024, six of eleven environmental stewards secured permanent employment, while two began retraining.
A Win-Win Commitment
Dr. Claudia Schilling, Senator for Labor, Social Affairs, Youth, and Integration, welcomed the new environmental stewards with these words: "This effort pays off twice—both for the participants and for the city. The environmental stewards clearly demonstrate how employment promotion works. Here, people are given real opportunities for participation and work." The Senator also emphasized the benefits for Bremen's residents: "They gain additional points of contact for waste disposal and cleanliness issues, which enhances both quality of life and a sense of security."
In 2026, the environmental stewards program will receive €62,000 in funding from state and project resources, covering personnel costs for implementation, guidance, support, and bridging wage gaps. The Senator for Labor, Social Affairs, Youth, and Integration is currently exploring the possibility of launching similar initiatives in other districts.
