Bremen’s Hospitals Plummet in Global Rankings as Closure Plans Spark Outrage
Bremen’s hospitals have struggled in the latest global rankings, raising concerns over their future. The 2024 International Clinic Ranking by Newsweek placed none of the city’s facilities among Germany’s top performers. Meanwhile, plans to close one of its best-rated hospitals have drawn sharp criticism from trade unions.
The Newsweek ranking assessed 219 German hospitals on medical care, hygiene, and patient safety. Berlin’s Charité led as Germany’s top clinic and ranked 6th worldwide. Hannover Medical School followed at 5th nationally and 39th globally, while Hamburg’s University Hospital Eppendorf secured 6th place in Germany and 48th worldwide.
Bremen’s hospitals now face calls for urgent reform after their weak showing in the global rankings. The planned closure of LdW, one of the city’s highest-rated facilities, has intensified debates over funding and healthcare quality. Without intervention, the city risks further decline in its medical services.
