Bremen’s Mayor Takes Helm of Bundesrat with Unity as His Mantra
Andreas Bovenschulte, the mayor of Bremen, has taken office as the new President of the Bundesrat. His election on 1 November 2025 was unanimous, marking the start of a one-year term. Under the motto ‘Many Strengths – One Country’, he has pledged to champion Germany’s federal diversity as a core strength.
In his inaugural speech, Bovenschulte stressed the vital role of federalism in uniting Germany’s varied regions. He pointed to past crises, such as the coronavirus pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, as proof of the system’s resilience. His presidency will focus on four major challenges: boosting the economy, protecting democratic values, restoring military independence, and tackling social inequality.
Bovenschulte’s leadership arrives at a time when Germany faces economic, security, and social pressures. His focus on federalism and unity will shape the Bundesrat’s agenda until late 2026. The backing of major states like Saarland and North Rhine-Westphalia underscores the broad support for his priorities.
