Bremen’s year-long safety roundtable demands political action for city centre reforms

A year-long roundtable on safety and cleanliness in Bremen’s city centre has wrapped up with a call for stronger political action. The Bremen Chamber of Commerce (IHK) organised the discussions, bringing together local government, police, businesses, and civil society to tackle ongoing challenges in the area. The roundtable ran from August 2023 to the present, focusing on practical solutions for Bremen’s city centre. Participants agreed on several measures, including an expanded local ordinance to curb aggressive panhandling. Joint patrols now operate at the main train station, while drug addiction support services have been widened. Plans for video surveillance were also finalised, alongside stricter cleaning efforts and a ban on feeding pigeons. The roundtable’s outcomes include new patrols, stricter rules, and expanded support services. Yet, without additional staffing and funding, some problems will persist. The Chamber of Commerce has urged local authorities to commit resources to ensure the measures take full effect.
