Brown University Launches Watson School of Policy with General Milley's Keynote
Brown University has inaugurated the Watson School, a new interdisciplinary policy school, with a keynote address by former U.S. Army General Mark A. Milley. The school is named after Brown alumnus and philanthropist Charles C. Watson III.
Milley, who served as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, met with students from the Military Fellows Program before his speech. He stressed the importance of understanding historical context and foundational documents to grasp current events. Milley clarified his role as providing non-partisan advice to the president, emphasizing the need for integrity, candor, and humility in public service.
John N. Friedman, the inaugural dean of the Watson School, believes Brown's interdisciplinary nature will foster progress on complex policy problems. He sees the current challenging political moment as an opportunity to build a forward-looking policy school. Milley echoed this sentiment, cautioning about the use of military troops in U.S. cities and emphasizing the upholding of American values.
The Watson School at Brown University aims to advance policy research through interdisciplinary scholarship. Its launch event, featuring General Mark A. Milley, underscored the school's commitment to non-partisan advice, historical understanding, and values-driven public service.
