Brunswick Museum Acquires Trabant P 601K, Celebrating Reunification and City History
The Brunswick State Museum has recently acquired a Trabant P 601K, built in 1989, marking 35 years since German reunification. This addition to the collection has sparked memories of the car's past and its connection to the city.
The Trabant was donated by Rudolf-Hugo Blume from Wendhausen / Lehre. Blume bought the vehicle in the 1990s and used it for trips around Braunschweig and into the Harz. In 2009, the Trabant gained fame when presenter Thomas Gottschalk drove it from Braunschweig to Berlin as part of a bet on the show 'Wetten, dass...?'.
Meanwhile, the city of Braunschweig has its own claim to fame. In 2009, over a thousand people gathered on the castle square to dance the 'Thriller' choreography by Michael Jackson, winning a city bet.
The Trabant P 601K now joins the Brunswick State Museum's collection, preserving a piece of the city's history and the spirit of German reunification. Meanwhile, the city continues to make its mark, from car journeys to mass dance performances.
