BSW rebrands ahead of Saxony-Anhalt’s high-stakes election showdown
The BSW party is preparing to change its name as it navigates a complex political landscape. Ahead of Saxony-Anhalt’s state election, the left-leaning group faces challenges in forming coalitions, with both the far-right AfD and the Left Party as contentious options. Incoming leader Fabio De Masi has made clear where the party stands—ruling out alliances with the AfD while also resisting a coalition defined solely by opposition to it.
This weekend, BSW members will vote on renaming the party from Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht to Bündnis für Soziale Gerechtigkeit und Wirtschaftliche Vernunft (Alliance for Social Justice and Economic Reason). The abbreviation BSW will stay the same, but the shift signals a broader ideological focus.
The BSW’s name change reflects an attempt to redefine its identity ahead of a pivotal election. But with the AfD leading by a wide margin, the party’s refusal to enter coalitions—either with or against the far right—limits its options.
