BSW State Board Rules Out Coalition with AfD in MV - BSW rejects AfD coalition but leaves door open for policy deals in upcoming election
The BSW (Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht) has firmly ruled out any coalition with the far-right AfD in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Following the state election board's decision, the party also rejected the idea of an AfD minister-president after September's election. However, they remain open to supporting individual AfD policies if these match their own goals.
The BSW leadership in northeastern Germany made its position clear: no government partnership with the AfD. This follows a meeting of the state executive board, which explicitly dismissed coalition talks after the upcoming vote.
Instead, the party backs a different approach. Co-founder Sahra Wagenknecht's proposal for an expert-led government has gained the BSW's support. They argue that qualified specialists—not career politicians—should run key ministries.
While rejecting formal cooperation, the BSW left room for policy-level agreements. If the AfD presents proposals that align with their programme, the party may consider supporting them on a case-by-case basis.
The BSW's stance sets clear limits on AfD influence in the region. Their refusal to enter a coalition or back an AfD-led government contrasts with a willingness to engage on specific policies. The party's push for expert governance now shapes their campaign ahead of the September election.
