BSW with new leadership - and old conflicts - BSW’s leadership shakeup leaves old tensions unresolved

Wagenknecht’s departure follows a divisive speech at the party conference, which reportedly made it harder for the BSW to find potential coalition partners. Despite this, the party’s representatives in Thuringia and Brandenburg will remain in government for now. In Thuringia, Infrastructure Minister Steffen Schutz has stated his intention to stay a reliable governing partner under the SPD-led state government. Meanwhile, Brandenburg’s Finance Minister Robert Crumbach has kept his options open, avoiding a clear stance on whether the BSW will continue in coalition or move into opposition.

The BSW now moves forward under new leadership but with the same political agenda. The party’s immediate focus is on retaining its government roles in Thuringia and Brandenburg while preparing for the 2026 Saxony-Anhalt election. With Wagenknecht still shaping policy from behind the scenes, the BSW’s direction remains firmly aligned with her original vision—at least for now.
