Pistorius: Must not bash the Bundeswehr - Troops 'Much better than their reputation' - Bundeswehr marks 70 years with modernization and a new conscription law

The German military, the Bundeswehr, is celebrating its 70th anniversary this week. Established in 1955, it has evolved significantly, with modernization efforts ongoing and a new conscription law on the horizon.

The Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment is driving these modernization efforts. Meanwhile, negotiations on a new conscription law are nearing completion, with a deal expected by the end of the week.

The special defense fund for the Bundeswehr is already showing results, contributing to accelerated procurement processes for military equipment. This has been particularly crucial given Germany's decision to support Ukraine against Russia, which has temporarily depleted military stockpiles.

The anniversary will be marked by a ceremonial oath-taking and parliamentary debate in Berlin on Wednesday. The event will honor the Bundeswehr's founding in 1955, a decade after World War II and Nazi Germany's surrender, and against the backdrop of escalating East-West tensions during the Cold War.

The defense minister has praised Germany's decision to support Ukraine, highlighting the importance of the Bundeswehr's role in maintaining peace and security. As the military marks its 70th anniversary, it continues to adapt and modernize, ready to face future challenges.
