Bundeswehr’s 70th Anniversary Reflects on Past and Future Challenges

The German Armed Forces, the Bundeswehr, turned 70 this year. The anniversary was marked with a ceremonial event in Dresden, attended by veterans, active personnel, and guests from politics and civil society. The celebration was notable for its quiet dignity, rather than grand fanfare.

The event, hosted jointly by the Army Officer School and the Saxon State Command, featured a panel discussion on the future of the armed forces. The topic of conscription was a central point of discussion, highlighting the importance of territorial and collective defense in light of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine.

The keynote address was delivered by Wolfgang Schneiderhan, a retired general. He reflected on the Bundeswehr's history, from its Cold War origins to its current focus on national and alliance defense. Schneiderhan emphasized the importance of trust within the military, a theme that resonated with the audience of veterans and active personnel.

The first soldiers received their commissioning orders on November 12, 1955, from Theodor Blank, then West Germany’s defense minister. Initially, not all of the 100 recruits had uniforms, a testament to the fledgling nature of the new armed forces.

The 70th anniversary of the Bundeswehr was a time for reflection and looking ahead. The quiet dignity of the celebration in Dresden was a fitting tribute to the past, while the panel discussion on conscription and the keynote address by Schneiderhan looked towards the future. The event underscored the importance of the armed forces in defending Germany and its allies.
