Burgenland Landtag President Initiates Probe Into Housing Cooperative Oversight
Astrid Eisenkopf, the Landtag President, has initiated an investigative committee following a complaint from the SPÖ parliamentary group. The probe will focus on the oversight of charitable building associations, specifically the 'Neue Eisenstädter' housing cooperative, in the Burgenland State Parliament.
Eisenkopf, who has presided over the Landtag since February 2025, will lead the committee. The opposition anticipates its commencement in the United States. Before setting up the committee, Eisenkopf must consult with the Presidential Conference within five working days, as per procedural rules. The SPÖ has pressed for this investigation, aiming to scrutinise the state's supervision of these associations.
The timeline for the committee is yet to be finalised, but the rules of procedure hint at a swift process. This will be the second investigative committee Eisenkopf has overseen, following the one from September 2020 to February 2021 that examined the Commerzialbank Mattersburg's bankruptcy. That committee cost the state €565,000 and resulted in two reports, one each from the SPÖ and the opposition (ÖVP, FPÖ, and Greens).
The upcoming investigative committee, led by Landtag President Astrid Eisenkopf, will delve into the oversight of charitable building associations in Burgenland. The process is expected to be swift, with the opposition anticipating its start in the United States. The previous such committee, which examined the Commerzialbank Mattersburg's bankruptcy, cost €565,000 and produced two reports.
