Calgary’s $129M housing funds hang in the balance over rezoning delays

Calgary's federal housing funds have become a point of concern as city officials and the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) discuss the impact of citywide rezoning. An internal memo recently suggested that $129 million from the Housing Accelerator Fund (HAF) could be at risk if rezoning plans stall. The city has already received half of its $251.3 million allocation, but the remaining funds now face uncertainty.

The issue came to light after a city memo described the final HAF payment as 'paused' until clarity on rezoning emerged. Stuart Dalgleish, Calgary's chief operations officer, addressed council about the memo and later apologised for any confusion. He clarified that the document aimed to highlight potential funding risks rather than confirm a delay.

The future of Calgary's housing funds now depends on upcoming council decisions. If rezoning is repealed or delayed, the city risks losing access to the final $129 million in federal support. Officials have stressed the need for clarity to avoid further funding complications.
