Canada Seeks 16-Year USMCA Extension to Secure North American Trade

Canada is pushing for a full 16-year extension of the USMCA trade deal ahead of its scheduled review in 2026. The government wants to secure long-term stability in trade relations with the United States and Mexico. Officials say the move will boost investment and economic cooperation across North America.

The US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) will undergo its first formal review next year. Canadian officials have made clear their preference for extending the deal for another 16 years—the maximum allowed under its terms.

The Canadian government’s proposal aims to lock in trade certainty until 2042. A successful extension would maintain existing tariff-free access for most goods between the three nations. The outcome will depend on negotiations during next year’s review process.
