Casey Wasserman steps down from agency amid Maxwell emails but stays with LA28 Olympics
Casey Wasserman has stepped back from his sports marketing agency after emails linked to Ghislaine Maxwell surfaced in early 2026. The controversy led to calls for his resignation from LA Mayor Karen Bass and other politicians. Despite this, he remains chairman and president of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games organising committee.
The Wasserman Agency has since rebranded as The Team, with president Mike Watts taking over daily operations. Wasserman has expressed regret over the emails but continues to lead preparations for the upcoming games.
The controversy began when emails between Wasserman and Ghislaine Maxwell from 2003 were released as part of the Jeffrey Epstein files. The disclosure prompted backlash, with artists like Chappell Roan and Water From Your Eyes cutting ties with the agency. Pressure mounted as LA Mayor Karen Bass and local officials demanded his resignation from the LA28 committee.
However, the LA28 Executive Committee and the US Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) stood by him. This support allowed Wasserman to focus entirely on the games after selling his stake in the agency. He has since apologised for the emails, stating he 'deeply regrets' the correspondence.
With the agency now rebranded as The Team, Mike Watts has taken charge of day-to-day operations. Meanwhile, Wasserman's role with LA28 remains unchanged, ensuring continuity in the organising committee's leadership.
The rebranding of the Wasserman Agency marks a shift in its operations, now led by Mike Watts. Wasserman's focus stays on delivering the 2028 Olympics, backed by the LA28 committee and USOPC. The fallout from the emails has not disrupted his position in the games' leadership, though it has reshaped his business ventures.
