CDC’s Mass Exodus Leaves Public Health in Crisis Amid Staff Cuts
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has experienced sweeping changes this year, leaving many public health officials deeply concerned. Thousands of staff have departed, key programmes have been cut, and experienced leaders have resigned—all while morale plummets among those who remain.
The CDC has lost between a quarter and a third of its workforce in 2024. Thousands of employees have left, either through voluntary departures or multiple rounds of job cuts. Aryn Melton Backus, a former CDC staffer, received three separate termination emails but currently remains on administrative leave.
The CDC now faces a weakened capacity to safeguard public health. Trust in the institution has eroded alongside its workforce and funding. With critical programmes gone and experienced leaders departed, the agency’s ability to handle emerging health threats remains in question.
