CDU calls for more investments in port infrastructure - CDU demands urgent port funding as Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania lags behind

The CDU parliamentary group in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is pressing the state government to boost funding for port infrastructure. Currently, the region's investment programme allocates no money for ports, despite federal funds being available for such upgrades. Opposition leader Daniel Peters has criticised the left-wing coalition for inaction, arguing that stronger ports are vital for economic and security reasons.

Other coastal states have already used federal special funds to modernise their ports. In Bremen, for example, €440,000 was approved in April 2025 to purchase a 2,800 m² plot near Bremerhaven's harbour. The land will host tiny houses for quarantine purposes under international health regulations. Meanwhile, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has yet to direct any of its federal infrastructure money toward its own Baltic Sea ports.

Peters, the CDU faction leader, stressed that ports, transport routes, and inland connections are crucial for trade and growth. He warned that the state must act now to strengthen northern Germany's role as a European logistics hub. Without investment, he argued, the region risks falling behind in competitiveness and security. The CDU's call comes as the state government faces criticism for relying on extra federal funding rather than taking its own strategic steps. Peters urged officials to allocate special funds immediately to make transport infrastructure more resilient and future-proof.

The push for port funding highlights a gap between available resources and current spending priorities. If approved, the investment could improve trade links, economic stability, and security in the region. The state government has yet to respond to the CDU's demands.
