Thomas Strobl Wins Heilbronn Direct Mandate Convincingly - CDU reclaims Heilbronn as Greens lose grip in tight election battle

The CDU has reclaimed the Heilbronn constituency after two straight wins by the Greens. Thomas Strobl, the party's interior minister, secured a direct mandate with 30.6 percent of first-past-the-post votes. Provisional results also show a tight race in the party-list vote, where the Greens' Gundula Achterberg led with 21.5 percent.

Strobl, born in Heilbronn in 1960, triumphed in his hometown by defeating the AfD's Maximilian Decker, who polled 22.2 percent. This victory reverses the Greens' dominance in the area, as they had won the seat in both 2016 and 2021.

The latest election marks a shift in local politics. In 2021, the Greens led with 30 percent, followed by the CDU at 23 percent and the AfD at 12 percent. By 2026, the CDU's share rose to over 30 percent, while the AfD climbed to around 18 percent—the largest gains among all parties. Meanwhile, the SPD dropped to about 5.5 percent, and the FDP and LINKE likely fell below the 5 percent threshold.

The Greens' Achterberg narrowly topped the party-list vote, but the CDU's strong showing in both direct and proportional results signals a change from previous elections. Strobl's win restores the CDU's hold on Heilbronn after years of Green control.

The results confirm Strobl's return to the Bundestag with a clear mandate. The CDU's gains, alongside the AfD's rise, contrast with declines for the Greens, SPD, and smaller parties. Heilbronn's political landscape now reflects broader shifts in voter preferences across the region.
