CDU rejects extension of current procurement law

The CDU faction in Bergisch Gladbach’s city council has rejected a proposal to extend current procurement rules for contracts below the EU threshold. The decision came during a vote on 18 December 2025, with party leaders arguing that the move would prolong unnecessary bureaucracy instead of simplifying processes for local businesses.

Dr. Michael Metten, head of the CDU group, criticised the extension as a missed chance to cut red tape. He stated that municipalities should be using new legal flexibilities to ease procedures, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises. The party has long pushed for clearer, more efficient rules rather than temporary fixes.

Under the existing system, procurement for below-threshold contracts remains heavily bureaucratic. The CDU’s opposition means the current regulations will stay in place, delaying any potential streamlining. Party officials insist that legally sound, simplified procedures would better serve both the council and local firms.

The rejection leaves Bergisch Gladbach’s procurement processes unchanged for now. Without reform, businesses and the council will continue operating under the same administrative burdens. The CDU maintains that future changes must focus on reducing complexity and supporting economic growth.
