CDU Saxony-Anhalt Shifts Focus to Counter Far-Right AfD

The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in Saxony-Anhalt is rethinking its strategy ahead of the state election. The party, led by relatively unknown candidate Sven Schulze, is moving away from its focus on migration. Instead, it's targeting the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party's lack of solutions to everyday concerns.

Schulze, the CDU's lead candidate, unveiled a new approach to counter the AfD. Rather than adopting the party's anti-migration or racist demands, which he believes wins no votes, he aims to strip the AfD of its credibility as a problem-solver. Schulze floated the idea of mandating community service for asylum seekers, shifting the focus from migration to integration.

The CDU is considering this change as migration is no longer the 'most important political problem' for 21% of the state's residents. Instead, issues like education, the economy, and social inequality are gaining traction. However, Schulze's lack of incumbency advantage and his relatively unknown status make it challenging for the CDU to drop the migration issue entirely. Schulenburg, the CDU's second-placed candidate, praised the federal government's 'shift in migration policy', indicating a potential shift in the party's stance.

The CDU in Saxony-Anhalt is adjusting its strategy to counter the AfD. By focusing on the far-right party's lack of solutions and promoting integration, the CDU aims to win votes. However, the party must navigate the challenge of moving away from a long-standing focus on migration, given its perceived importance among residents.
