CDU secures landslide victory in Wiesbaden's Sonnenberg district election

Wiesbaden's local elections saw a rise in voter engagement, with turnout climbing to 48.1 percent—6.3 points higher than in 2021. The Sonnenberg district stood out, recording a particularly strong participation rate of 70.6 percent. Early results show the CDU securing a dominant lead in the area.

In Sonnenberg, the CDU took a decisive victory with 46.6 percent of the vote. The party's top candidate, Stefan Bauer, received 3,429 personal votes, followed by Michael Hofmeister and Dr. Arno Grau. The Greens came in second at 19.1 percent, just ahead of the SPD's 18.2 percent.

The FDP also performed well, earning 15.1 percent of the ballots. Alexander Winkelmann led the party's candidates, gathering 749 personal votes. Meanwhile, the Greens' strongest contenders included Claudia Krafczyk, Petra Bermes, and Jochen Klauenflügel. The Free Voters managed 1.0 percent of the vote. Out of 4,860 eligible voters in Sonnenberg, 3,429 cast their ballots. Across the city, however, 3.6 percent of all votes were invalid. Wiesbaden's election process divided the area into 163 general voting districts and 84 postal vote districts for counting.

The CDU's clear win in Sonnenberg contrasts with the citywide turnout of 48.1 percent. The district's high participation rate of 70.6 percent highlights strong local engagement. Officials will now finalise results before confirming seats in the local council.
