CDU sweeps Koblenz in 2026 Rhineland-Palatinate state election wins
The CDU has secured both direct mandates in Koblenz during the 2026 Rhineland-Palatinate state election. Andreas Birtel and Philip Rünz won in Constituency 8 and Constituency 9, respectively. Voter turnout varied, with higher participation in Constituency 8 than in Constituency 9.
In Constituency 8 (Koblenz/Lahnstein), CDU candidate Andreas Birtel claimed victory with 33.6% of the first-past-the-post votes. The party also led the party-list vote there, securing 32.8%. Meanwhile, the SPD saw a sharper decline, finishing at 28.1%. The AfD made significant gains in this constituency, rising by 8.7 percentage points to reach 15.0%. Turnout stood at 68.4%.
In Constituency 9 (Koblenz), CDU's Philip Rünz won the direct mandate with 29.8% of the vote. The party also topped the party-list vote at 30.2%, while the SPD dropped to 25.2%. The AfD increased its share to 13.2% in this area. Voter turnout here was lower, at 61.3%. The AfD did not secure any direct mandates in this election but gained nine list mandates. This follows its 2021 performance, where it had 7.6% of second votes and 8.3% of first votes statewide.
The CDU's double victory in Koblenz strengthens its position in the region. The SPD's losses and the AfD's gains reflect shifting voter preferences. These results will shape the political landscape in Rhineland-Palatinate for the coming term.
