Cebu Launches Heritage Commission to Protect Cultural Landmarks in 2025

The Provincial Government of Cebu has created a new body to safeguard its cultural news. Executive Order 79, issued in 2025, establishes the Cebu Province Heritage Site Commission as the main authority for heritage protection. The Commission will oversee both public and private heritage sites under its management.

Gov. Pamela Baricuatro will lead the Commission, with Provincial Administrator Joseph 'Ace' Durano serving as executive director. The team includes officials from provincial offices, Provincial Board committee chairpersons, and cultural institutions. Representatives from tourism, infrastructure, arts and culture, environment, and education will join, alongside delegates from the Philippine National Museum, the University of San Carlos, and the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc.

The Commission’s duties cover a wide range of responsibilities. It will review petitions for new heritage site declarations and draft rules to enforce protection measures. Approval will be required for any restoration, renovation, or construction within designated areas, ensuring compliance with heritage standards. Beyond regulation, the body will supervise restoration projects and assess architectural plans. It will also determine how heritage properties can be used and maintain an up-to-date registry of all declared sites. Coordination with stakeholders will form a key part of its efforts to strengthen cultural preservation across Cebu.

The new Commission now holds authority over heritage site management in Cebu. Its work will include enforcing regulations, approving modifications, and maintaining records of protected landmarks. The move aims to ensure long-term conservation of the province’s cultural and historical assets.
