Celle Honours Ex-Mayor Martin Biermann with Lifetime Citizenship for Cultural Legacy
The Celle City Council honoured former Mayor Dr. h.c. Martin Biermann with honorary citizenship in December 2025. The award recognised his decades of service, including 19 years as mayor and his lasting impact on the city's cultural and urban development. A ceremony led by Mayor Dr. Jörg Nigge marked the occasion on December 12.
Biermann's political career began in 1973 when he became a city councillor. By 1977, he had risen to lead the CDU parliamentary group. His influence grew further when he took on the role of City Director in 1990, followed by his election as Mayor of Celle—a position he held until 2008.
During his tenure, he transformed Celle's art scene. One of his key achievements was merging the Bomann Museum with the Celle Art Museum, which houses the Robert Simon Collection. This collaboration led to joint exhibitions, including interdisciplinary shows blending art and regional history since 2020. The partnership also expanded public access to collections, optimised resources, and boosted visitor numbers by 15% by 2025. New digital offerings were introduced as part of the initiative.
Beyond art, Biermann focused on urban renewal. He oversaw the expansion of the Städtische Union into a modern conference and congress centre. Additionally, he repurposed former military barracks for civilian use. His broader vision included preserving the historic old town, strengthening global ties, and supporting sports and cultural programmes.
In February 2026, Biermann formally inscribed his name in Celle's Golden Book, cementing his legacy in the city's history.
The honorary citizenship reflects Biermann's long-standing contributions to Celle's growth. His leadership reshaped the city's museums, infrastructure, and public spaces. The recognition also highlights his role in fostering cultural and economic connections that continue to benefit the community.
