Central Valley Veterans Day Parade Marches On Despite Government Shutdown Setbacks

The Central Valley Veterans Day Parade, now in its 106th year, will proceed as planned on November 11, despite a government shutdown causing the cancellation of a planned flyover. The event, starting at 11:11 AM at Fresno City Hall and ending at Chukchansi Park, expects over 114 entries and a ceremonial flyover by the Fresno County Sheriff's Office, with other agencies potentially joining.

Typically, the California Highway Patrol, Fresno Police Department, and various military branches participate alongside the sheriff's office in ceremonial flyovers. However, due to the shutdown, other active duty military groups such as the Air Force Band, Air Force ROTC, and military recruiting groups will not participate. Despite this, the parade will still be a three-hour celebration.

Parade President and 30-year veteran Gabriel Villasenor has been working tirelessly to create a show of appreciation for veterans. Community support has been crucial to the event's success. Following the parade, a luncheon for veterans and their families will be held at American Legion Post 509. Veteran Vickie Pound, involved in the planning, finds joy in giving back to her fellow veterans and appreciates the camaraderie it brings.

The 106th Central Valley Veterans Day parade will proceed as scheduled, honoring veterans with a ceremonial flyover and a community celebration. Despite the cancellation of a planned flyover due to the government shutdown, the event promises to be a meaningful tribute to the service of veterans.
