Channel21 files for insolvency after 25 years in teleshopping decline

German teleshopping channel Channel21 has filed for insolvency after 25 years in operation. The District Court of Hanover opened preliminary proceedings on 25 March 2026, marking a sharp decline for a business that once thrived under the name RTL Shop. Lawyer Dr Stefanie Zulauf has now been appointed to oversee the process as the company faces financial collapse. Channel21 began in 2001 as RTL Shop, a well-known name in teleshopping. By 2008, it had been sold to a financial investor and rebranded, but its market position steadily weakened over the following years. Competitors like QVC and HSN dominated the sector, leaving Channel21 as a smaller, less recognised player.

The company's struggles reflect broader industry challenges. Linear TV viewership has dropped sharply, while online retail giants have taken over much of the market. These pressures intensified recently, with Austrian rival Mediashop also collapsing. Creditors have now been ordered to follow strict payment rules under the court's supervision. Dr Zulauf will determine whether Channel21 can continue operating or if restructuring remains possible. All major decisions at the broadcaster now require her approval, as the insolvency process moves forward.

The insolvency proceedings highlight the tough conditions facing teleshopping businesses today. Channel21's decline follows years of falling TV audiences and fierce competition from e-commerce. The court's next steps will decide if the company can survive or if its 25-year run has come to an end.
