Charité and Schwarz Digits unite to launch Europe's sovereign health data platform

Charité University Hospital and Schwarz Digits have launched a joint venture to build a new health data platform. Named HIVEPRO, the system will bring together fragmented medical records from different hospitals. The aim is to make clinical information easier to access while keeping data secure and under local control.

The partnership, called Schwarz Charité Health Data GmbH, sees Schwarz Digits holding a 75% share, with Charité keeping the remaining 25%. The project builds on years of research by the HiGHmed Consortium, which has worked since 2016 to improve how medical data is structured and shared across institutions.

HIVEPRO will run on STACKIT, Schwarz Digits' cloud infrastructure based in Germany. This ensures all data processing complies with European privacy laws and avoids reliance on U.S.-based hyperscalers. Hospitals using the platform will keep full ownership of their datasets while integrating information from various systems. Schwarz Digits has positioned STACKIT as a sovereign alternative to foreign cloud providers. The company stresses that hosting data in Germany removes risks tied to non-European legal jurisdictions.

The new platform will help streamline access to health records for clinical use. By keeping data within European borders, it also addresses concerns about compliance and security. Hospitals involved in the project will maintain control over their information while benefiting from shared insights.
