Chechen aide honored for nuclear security dies in Grozny car crash
Adam Kadyrov, an aide to Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, was recently awarded a gold medal for his work in securing a major nuclear facility. The honour came just weeks before his sudden death in a car accident in Grozny. Earlier this month, he had also led discussions on election preparations and regional security.
Kadyrov received the medal For Merit in Enhancing Nuclear Power Plant Security in recognition of his involvement in safeguarding the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. The award was linked to his actions during a special military operation at the site.
Days later, he chaired a meeting with Chechnya’s security commanders. Topics included public safety measures and organisational work ahead of upcoming elections. The gathering highlighted his role in coordinating regional security efforts. Reports later confirmed his death in a car crash in mid-January 2026. While the exact time of the accident remains unclear, sources place the incident in the Chechen capital.
The gold medal acknowledged Kadyrov’s contributions to nuclear security. His final weeks involved high-level security meetings and election planning. The crash in Grozny marked an abrupt end to his work in Chechnya’s leadership.
